Right. So I get lots of ideas and very few of them make the spot light on the front stage but I decided that I would throw this one out to the wolves and see the response.
Before I get into the essay style posts that I learnt well from Compaqman I think I will give a summary to give you an idea whether it is worth reading the rest of the post.
Why/ Aim/ goal /objective ambition or purpose of this project is? Well um.. not sure I will get back to you when I figure it out or you can give me some ideas. But to collect as much information about the 802.11a/b/g network in the greater Durban or know as the eThekwini Municipality.
With the data gathered we can work out Encyption verse unencyption. Channel usage, brand usage and maybe some other stuff.
How? I'm looking for anyone out there to submit war driving results to me so that I can process and collate them to something that is readable.
Ok so if you still interested then you will be reading this part which is cool because this is the more in-depth how to and technical part.
Lets start from the beginning.
I want to get as much info about 802.11 networks as possible in the eThekweni Municipality. This information I am hoping will be provided by everyone out there that is vaguely interested in donating a bit of time.
How do you collect this data? War drive to collect this data.
What is war driving? Click here to get details http://www.netstumbler.com/faqs/general/
Use Netstumbler (for windows) or kismet (for linux) and email me the full log files.
In kismet they are .CVS and .GPS and .NET and .XML and .DUM (if it is not to big compressed, under 6MB or if you can up it to an FTP if it is bigger I can grab it)
In netstubler email me: the ns1 file/s
Get Netstumbler from - http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
Get kismet from: http://www.kismetwireless.net/download.shtml
Live CD boot to one of the greatest security tool collections - Backtrack or formally know as Auditor. I have copies of version 1 and 2 as well as the beta http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack_download.html
General rules: all data that is submitted must be collected with the month of march.2007 (1 – 31 March 2007)
All data much be collected in the eThekweni boundaries (this extend north to Westbrook, south to Scottbourgh and west to cato ridge.) if you not sure if you fall within the area email it anyway.
You may collect data with or without a GPS but with a GPS will be far more useful.
Data will be correlated and duplicates will be removed by BSSID or MAC address.
Any ideas of what we can do with this info would be greatly appreciated. As well as sponsors
please email all files to mapdurban@dwc.za.net |

got my laptop yesterday. I'll start asap.
I traveel the N2 and N3(Up to Westville) so I log the AP's along that route and then around Westville when I'm free. _________________ {Gaming PC}

I spent a good few hours in the vehicle doing it last year, here's how I did it as another solution.
I used my bluetooth gps and pda. Unfortunately ministumbler does not run on my pda (iPaq) so I used wififofum (also free of the net). Then I did my driving around the areas that I was going and at the end saved my data as a ns1 file on wififofum. This was then transferred to my laptop and checked in Netstumbler before uploading the data to wigle.
Any other queries fire away.... _________________ He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day! |

I was thinking about doing a fly over video when I have all the data when March is finished
question is now how much bandwidth do we have to post videos....
oh i got the answer... I post them on the DWC network and we will have all the bandwidth we need and it's free |

If I could ask if any one has any war driving logs that they have not sent to me please can you do so.
I am going to start tallying up all the APs
remember even if you dont have GPS details it doesnt matter |
