Line Of Site
From DwcWiki
Line of Site - Abbreviated to LOS
Line Of Site is something we talk about quite a bit when dealing with wireless technology. Quite simply - Line of site is what it says - if you are wanting to setup a wireless connection, you have to be able to see the opposite side of the link from both sides. This means that a wireless link will not work properly through hills, trees, buildings etc. Distance doesn't matter too much - don't worry if you can't see the other side with the naked eye - as long as the path between the two points is not obscured.
- One of the best ways for testing LOS is to take high res photographs at the points you want to mount equipment - aimed at the location you want to put the opposite side of the link. You would then use those photos to determine if you have a chance of a link. You can then zoom in on photos and look to see if you can identify any common features (buildings etc.) which would help you figure out the line of site path.
- Another way to test line of site is to use high powered (million candle power) torches at night - get someone to stand at each side of the link and see if you can spot the beam of light from the other side.
- Google Earth can be used to measure link distance etc. and can give you a vague idea if a link is possible... but it is no substitute for going out there and checking. Trees and buildings don't show up on Google Earth so you can't tell if these would be a problem.
Remember - if you can see the other side clearly - there is a very good chance that your link will work. If you can't see the other side, there is a very good chance your link won't work ;)
The only definite way to know if a link will work or not is to test.
