Naming Conventions
From DwcWiki
Naming, IP and Other Conventions used on the DWC Network
1. For backbone links use the following for interface names and ssid. Name as follows station-acesspoint, try abbriviate where possible to 3 - 4 letters. For example a one side of a backbone link where the station is in morningside and the accesspoint is on bluff shall be called morn-bluff with the suffix .dwc.za.net appended for the ssid.
2. For general accesspoint names where cpe units will be conencting use the following for interface names and ssid. Use agreed apon highsite name which is usually area, followed by a numic number starting at 1. So a highsite in the morningside area will be called morningside and this the first accesspoint on this highsite shall be called morningside1 with the suffix of .dwc.za.net appended for the ssid. Always use a numeric number in the ssid to account for further accesspoints added to this site in future
3. For IP address asignment use the following, the interface on the acesspoint side shall allways have the first availiable ip on the assigned subnet for the interface. A new interface in morningside is assigned morningside1. This interface has been assigned a subnet of 172.19.255.0/29 so the interface must be first on the provided subnet, in this case 172.19.255.1/29.
4. Any changes to the IP Allocations must be recorded on the wiki to ensure others have the most recent version and when setting up new sites there are no conflicting adresses.
5. Security profiles used for encryption on a particular interface should be named to corespond with the interface name. So an interface called morninside1 shall have a security profile of morningside1.
6. All interface names, security profiles an ssids are to be entered using lower case.
7. If you are a station you must name your interface to the name of the ssid you are connecting to before the suffix .dwc.za.net. So if you connect to an accesspoint of morningside1 you must change your wifi interface name to morningside1.
8. Hostnames or identities for stations or accesspoints should be set to either the users nick or the first name of the person where site is situated. A station in morningside located at bobbs residence shall be called bobb. Keep in mind when choosing what to use to keep it the same so whatever is listed in this file is what you use
9. Where snmp is a supported feature on equipment it must be enabled for the collection of statistical performance data. Contact a member of the Core Team to ensure that the device is added to the monitoring system.
