DWC Projects

This page contains a listing of the current projects that the DWC is going to be working on..... We are looking for volunteers to get involved and help on these projects. If you feel that you can help out - please contact a member of the Core Team and let them know.

Website Upgrade

  • Keep the old Wiki - we still use some of it.
  • A fresh Web 2.0 look and feel.
  • FAQ must be redone - this will help with a lot of the basic questions.
  • Create some basic tutorials for people who join the network. "How to connect to DWC IRC Channel", "How to do LOS check", "How to configure ROS" etc.

Communication & Events Co-Ordinator

  • Organise meetings and socials.
  • Maintain template responses to people - "How to I connect", "Where do I buy kit."
  • Maintain a database of sorts and send out bulk email communications to members and interested parties.
  • Maintain the DWC Twitter account - send out info on network status, meetings etc.

Setup new servers

  • 4 Highend HP Servers (ML50s's, 380s etc) with redundant PSUs etc, a 2TB Fibrechannel SAN and a network cabinet have been donated to DWC.
  • One of the servers is presently hosting the DWC Tube and FFS engine on VMWARE ESXi - hosted at ville by Boogeyman.
  • The remaining servers must be setup with the SAN to form a VMWARE hosting system for DWC core services.

Investigate possibility of DWC linking with Metro Fibre Ethernet

Build DWC Intranet environment

  • Local copy of Wikipedia
  • Boost content on DWC Tube
  • Revamp Cacti Box - Monitoring
  • Maintain cacti box and ensure that all links on the network are added for SNMP monitoring
  • Setup "Second Life" server on a VM.
  • Setup a radio station.

Cleanup DWC Wugplotter & populate all missing data fields

  • The current KML file is a mess with duplicates and out of date entries - needs to be cleaned up.
  • Link data needs to be inputted to the system to make the KML drawings more accurate.
  • All SSIDs, channels and encryption info must be captured into the system.
  • All IP addresses etc must be put into the WUGPlotter System.

Build relationships with other WUGs

  • Interact with WUG members in other WUG IRC Channels to build relationships with other WUGS.
  • Reestablish VPN connections to other WUGs.
  • Make services available to members of other WUGs.

DWC IRC Server

  • Fix 172.19.250.17 IRC Server - DONE!
  • Virtualise IRC Server into a small linux VM and get it onto the DWC VMWARE system. -DONE - thanks Spore
  • Identify and promote certain members to OPS to better manage the channel.
  • Make sure the topic is up to date.
  • Get conversations going in the channel.
  • Ensure that visitors to the channel are taken care of.

Expand DWC Footprint

  • Identify and followup on leads for new highsites.
  • Manage upgrades of existing highsites to ensure they are meeting the needs of the community.
  • Maintain a "test kit" that can be borrowed to test links & a register of who has what.
  • Assist new members by pointing them to tutorials and providing basic advice.

Gaming + Online Events

  • Setup gameservers for members.
  • Setup mumble (low-latency) servers for in-game VoIP.
  • Organise & advertise tournaments etc.

Create additional tutorials

  • Create a few screeencast type tutorials of various configuration options for Microtik & OpenWRT & Ubiquity Nanostation to help new users
  • Create a getting started Guide - DONE

Highsite Upgrades / New Highsites

  • Westville site (izib1zi) needs to be upgraded. Antennas for Pinetown + Queensburgh/Northdene to be added with an additional router board + the entire highsite to be relocated to the roof from the balcony. We are hoping by raising the height we will improve the link between Tollgate and iz1b1zi as well as create new link opportunities with increased coverage. If there are resources left over, spare antennas to be added for possible links to Toti as well as the site has line of site to the Elgro building in Toti.
  • Upgrade Tollgate highsite - there are several opportunities for new members to connect from the North side of Tollgate - but there are no antennas facing that direction. There are spare (unused( antennas on the site - these could be relocated to create new link opportunities.
  • Westville Central Highsite - Boogeyman has arranged conditional permission to get a highsite setup at one of the local schools in Westville. The school field has several massive light poles which can be seen from many homes in the area. This site presents a unique challenge as the power supply is only available when the lights are switched on. We might have to investigate alternate power solutions - i.e. solar power for the highsite.
  • Town Highsite - power supply is often unstable at the Town highsite. We need to investigate the cause and see if there is a solution - either battery backup or alternate power solutions - i.e. solar power.
  • UKZN Westville site - Boogeyman is seeking permission to put up a highsite at UKZN Westville Campus on L Block. This site would greatly boost the coverage of the DWC network. Unfortunately there is a lot of red tape in getting the site. Once permission comes through, we need to raise funds + plan the technical detail of the site. This is a golden opportunity to get several new members on the network who have Line of site to the proposed highsite.
  • Pinetown/New Germany site - through Mortar (via Setsquare) we have access to put a highsite at the top of the hill in the New Germany Nature reserve. This site would massively boost coverage - opening Pinetown and New Germany for expansion. This site has Line of site as far as Umhlanga.

Get involved! These projects will take DWC to new heights - if you can help out with any of the above projects please contact one of the Core Team.
